Re: wifi calling on Sonim XP8

FirstNet WiFi Calling needs to be escalated to first priority.  Having no or poor service inside commercial buildings is unacceptable in a priority calling network.

Then why are BOTH Sonim phones listed as Wifi calling capable on the sales page?

@wpcj-1

If Lars is correct, ATT has been incorrectly listing this phone as Wifi calling capable.  I will try to get someone to provide an acurate reply.

The Sonim device is not FirstNet exclusive and can be used by standard AT&T users.  The phone(s) themselves can support a feature like Wi-Fi Calling and still not be able to use the feature in the FirstNet Core network. That does not mean that a person cannot have access to FirstNet and have the ability to use Wi-Fi calling. Firstnet approved customers can remain on the AT&T Enterprise Network (standard orange SIM) which will support Wi-Fi calling. These customers still have access to the priority and preemption that is offered by FirstNet  while on the Enterprise network. There are different, more granular features that are exclusively available on the FirstNet Core.

As for features like Wi-Fi calling, they are already in the road map future updates. One thing to consider is the original source and purpose of FirstNet network was originally designed based on the most commonly used Hardware types and features that pertain to them. If one considers the environment where the First Responders will be using FirstNet and the conditions that would potentially exist which requires the additional services that are offered, it is highly unlikely those First Responders will be sitting next to a known Wi-Fi hotspot that they can log into to make calls and process data.  The other thought on top of that is the fact that even if there were a Wi-Fi hotspot or source, depend on the emergency that was occurring de there is a high likelihood it would not be available.

Hello all,

I am not completly sure, because I am not direct on the AT&T network. I am situated in Europe.

I noticed that with a special code, you may be capable to open the WiFi Calling Provision within the device. I tested it with my Sonim XP8800 and that seems to work.

Please try to dial from your phone app: *#*#4636#*#*

Then you will come into "Testing". Select "Phone information" and scroll down. You will see:

"Wifi Calling Provisioned" most likely unable. Just swipe this to enable! Touch the update & Refresh buttons. Leave this screen (for the Sonim XP8 by using the left arrow button). And see if this will work for you.

Please keep me updated.
